Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
