A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The wider defence situation underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official activities, from transport use to communication habits.
