Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
